I was born in Madagascar, and at age 10, after my mother passed away, I was sent to a Catholic missionary school. From there, I ended up in an orphanage and was eventually adopted by a white French family in France. It marked the beginning of my journey of self-identification, as I had to let go of my Malagasy identity and embrace French culture. I spoke Malagasy and our local dialect in my childhood village in Madagascar. But French became the primary language when I moved to a Catholic missionary school. By the time I arrived in France, I had forgotten Malagasy due to trauma and lack of practice. Despite meeting Malagasy friends, I haven’t been able to regain fluency.” — Ms. Pellecuer! (2024)
