June 12, Biafra, and the Brewing Tensions in Nigeria

“Nigeria is falling apart as we speak.” Those were the words of Ada when I inquired about the state of the nation from her point of view.

Nigeria is the most populous black country in the world. Although our skin color unites us, ethnicity and religion have remained areas of tension that have constantly threatened our collective existence as a united nation. Moreover, the country is battling insurgency and banditry in the North, agitations of secessions from the West and East, killer Fulani herdsmen in the Middle Belt region, and threats to resort to arms from the South. In addition, there’s been a spate of criminal activities such as kidnapping and armed robbery, causing a general sense of insecurity and tension across the country.

Sadly those at the helm of affairs who are supposed to keep the peace have not done much to quell these rising tensions. The presidency posted a tweet threatening the Easterners who are agitating for secession to form the nation of Biafra. This comment from the presidency sparked a nationwide…
