A survivor is someone diagnosed with cancer till the end of life. This is a saying we have at The Zambian Cancer Society — Udie Soko (2022)

For this week’s episode, I interviewed the lovely Ms. Udie Soko — the founder of The Zambian Cancer Society.

Udie is a unique name. Let me tell you why. We start the show by giving a brief history of her family, childhood, and her name. Her father named her unilateral declaration of independence (UDI), and thankfully, her mother convinced him to add the letter e at the end. Why? You might ask. Well, because she was born on the day Ian Smith (Zimbabwe’s) prime minister made his declaration from the United Kingdom on the 11th of November 1965. This form of naming is not uncommon among Africans. Lol. What are some of the exciting names you have come across?

We discussed all things cancer. She is a two-time cancer survivor. She was first diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes in 1989. Back then, Zambia did not have a cancer hospital, and she was privileged to have been treated abroad in Germany. She was an…
