“I learned this from being in predominantly white spaces. At first, I didn’t know how to navigate it. Now, I help people ‘write up’ themselves — not as a reprimand, but to uplift. It’s equity work for me. We often hear, ‘You’re great, but…’ I don’t want any ‘buts.’ I tell people to go all out, confidently stating their accomplishments. It’s not boasting. I’ve even shown how men use strong language like ‘vigorously,’ while women often soften their tone.” — Dr. Iwuchukwu (2024)

Another perspective to consider: those in authority over you are human, too, and likely want to do a good job and go home to their family, like everyone else. Unless someone is malicious, most supervisors believe they act in good faith. Their management style may differ from yours, and they may not always communicate or handle situations the way you would prefer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have bad intentions. It’s essential to give them the benefit of the doubt and try to see the best in them while being aware of your emotional responses. Maturity comes from recognizing that even if they’re not always right, their actions may come from a place of good intentions. — Mo! (2024)
