She’s back! The last time my cousin, Sola Adewumi, was on the show, she was just beginning her journey into nursing school in Canada. Despite already holding a Master’s degree in communication and navigating life with Retinitis Pigmentosa — a genetic disorder that causes gradual retinal degeneration and eventual blindness — Sola was ready to take on this new path. Now, as a thriving third-year nursing student, Sola reflects on her journey, the challenges she has faced, and the resilience and confidence she has built. Her strength has not only transformed her life but has shaped her children as well.


Sola’s story is a testament to determination, positivity, and faith. With God’s support and encouragement from her school and professors, she faces the demands of nursing school and realizes she is never alone. Confidence, too, has blossomed through her studies — a crucial asset as she moves forward.


Living with Retinitis Pigmentosa is challenging, but Sola stresses the value of understanding her condition and connecting with others facing similar challenges. Raising awareness about living with this condition can inspire others, especially in less-resourced societies, by showing they are not alone. It can also foster inclusive communities that support people with disabilities.
